This workshop takes place at the Restore at 250 Albany ST, Springfield

Presenters: Daniel Staub and Kristin Brennan

Presenters Daniel Staub and Kristin Brennan will be describing their
vision of building small-scale community economies and the steps they
are taking to orient their own daily lives toward that goal. Kristen is
a 2008 Local Hero Award recipient for her efforts in helping sustain
local agriculture.

Living in the Mason Square area of Springfield, Daniel and Kristin raise
a substantial portion of their own food in their backyard, including
fruits and vegetables, eggs and honey, and buy or trade for the rest
with local farms, small businesses and neighborhood gardeners. They heat
their house with wood from trees cut down in their neighborhood, cut to
length with handsaws and chopped with an axe. They transport themselves
and their two young children without a car, by riding bicycles, walking
and taking public transportation. Overall, they attempt to minimize
their resource needs, and meet their necessities through their own
labor, the offerings of the natural environment around them and the
skills of their neighbors.

They will be describing both the joys and the challenges of living such
a life and will hope for participants to share their own insights into
building a more self-sufficient community.
